When Should I Sign up for Medicare?
Navigating Medicare can be confusing, with parts A, B, C and D oh and don’t forget F or G. It’s no wonder so many individuals question when they should sign up for Medicare and what parts they need.
For most individuals they will become eligible for Medicare when they are within 3 months of turning 65. This opens up a 7-month eligibility window for initial Medicare enrollment. The three months before your birthday, your birthday month, and the three months following your birthday. During this enrollment window individuals will need to sign up for Parts A and B, check here for how to enroll. Many individuals choose to carry supplemental Medicare insurance, or Medigap policies, known as Parts F or G or a Medicare Advantage Policy, known as Part C. While Parts A and B are required to be enrolled to avoid penalties, parts C, F, and G are not. But Medicare does not cover your health care costs 100% and it is important to know what gaps are missing in your Medicare coverage. Additionally, individuals should enroll in a Part D plan for prescription drug coverage (PDP) or a Part C plan with included drug coverage to avoid paying higher premiums imposed by late sign up penalties.
